New York New Jersey Stadium to Host 2026 World Cup Final

The New York New Jersey Stadium, formerly known as MetLife Stadium, will be the venue for the 2026 World Cup final on July 19. This iconic stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is set to host eight matches, including the climactic final. The stadium will temporarily change its name due to FIFA branding rules, which prohibit corporate names during the tournament. The venue will also undergo several upgrades to accommodate the event, including the installation of a natural grass pitch and enhanced digital connectivity.

Stadium History and Capacity

MetLife Stadium opened in 2010 at a cost of $1.6 billion and is home to the New York Giants and Jets. With a capacity of 82,500, it is one of the largest stadiums in the United States. The stadium has hosted numerous high-profile events, including the 2016 Copa America Centenario final and the Club World Cup final in 2025. During the World Cup, the stadium will be at full capacity for most matches, with the highest attendance recorded at 83,367 for an NFL game in 2023.

Notable Events and Upgrades

The stadium has witnessed significant moments in sports history, such as Lionel Messi’s penalty miss in the 2016 Copa America final and Odell Beckham Jr.’s iconic one-handed catch in 2014. For the World Cup, the stadium will undergo several changes, including the installation of a temporary natural grass pitch, new corner video boards, and an upgraded audio system. Security systems and 5G connectivity will also be enhanced to ensure a seamless experience for fans.

Travel and Accessibility

Located in East Rutherford, the stadium is accessible via train, bus, and car. New Jersey Transit has reduced the cost of train tickets to $105 for the tournament, down from the initial $150. The New York/New Jersey host committee has also slashed the cost of shuttle buses to the stadium by 75 percent, making it more affordable for fans. However, parking will be limited, and no tailgating will be allowed on game days. Fans are advised to plan their travel in advance due to the potential for traffic and the need to arrive early.

Games Scheduled at the Stadium

The stadium will host a series of matches, including Brazil v Morocco on June 13, France v Senegal on June 16, and the final on July 19. The three-tiered seating bowl ensures excellent sightlines and an immersive experience for fans. The local area is rich in soccer history, with three major professional clubs nearby and a legacy that dates back to the 1970s when Pelé played for the New York Cosmos. Despite the cancellation of the official FIFA Fan Fest, smaller watch parties and street fairs will take place in the surrounding areas.
