Inter Miami Honors Lionel Messi with Stadium Stand Naming While He's Still Playing
Inter Miami has announced that the east stand of its new Miami Freedom Park stadium will be named after Lionel Messi, creating what the MLS club calls a "rare and unique case" in world sport by honoring a player with a stadium stand while they are still actively competing.
The official unveiling of the "Leo Messi Stand" will take place on April 4 when Inter Miami plays its first game at the new stadium against Austin FC. The stand will be located in the east section of the Nu Stadium, consisting of sections 117 to 121 in the lower bowl and 217 to 223 in the upper bowl.
"Recognizing someone is not always about closing a chapter. Sometimes it is about realizing you are witnessing something unique," the club said in a statement announcing the honor.
The 38-year-old Argentine superstar signed for Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and agreed to a contract extension through the 2028 season in April. Since joining the club, Messi has registered 82 goals and 53 assists, leading the club's all-time standings for each category.
Messi has already brought significant success to Inter Miami, winning the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield, and the 2025 MLS Cup. He also won the golden boot and his second MVP award in 2025, adding to his first MVP award the year before.
The new Miami Freedom Park stadium has a capacity of 26,700, replacing the previous Chase Bank stadium which seated 21,550 and was situated around 33 miles away. Inter Miami announced in 2024 that it would play its home games at the new venue from 2026, with naming rights partner Nubank confirmed earlier this month.
Currently, Inter Miami sits third in the Eastern Conference after five games, just three points off top spot with three wins. The honor comes as Messi continues to make history with the club, adding another milestone to his already legendary career.
