Jailer 2 crosses Rs 549 crore worldwide in seven days, claims biggest first week in Tamil cinema

Record first-week claim for Rajinikanth sequel

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has registered a major box office milestone, with makers announcing a worldwide collection of more than Rs 549 crore in its first seven days in theatres. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the action entertainer was released worldwide on October 15 and has delivered a strong opening-week performance, according to its production house, Sun Pictures.

Rajinikanth in Jailer 2 promotional still

The makers have described the sequel’s first-week collection as the highest in Tamil cinema history. The announcement adds to the buzz around Rajinikanth’s latest outing as the film enters its second week in theatres.

‘The record maker and the record breaker’

Announcing the film’s first-week achievement, Sun Pictures wrote:

“The record maker and the record breaker! 549+ CRORES WORLDWIDE! The highest-grossing first week collections in Tamil cinema history! #Jailer2 Industry Mega Blockbuster.”

The production house’s announcement puts Jailer 2 above the Rs 549 crore mark worldwide in its first seven days. Sun Pictures has also claimed that the film has recorded the biggest first-week collection in Tamil cinema history. The figure represents the makers’ official worldwide gross announcement; independent trade estimates may differ.

The milestone nevertheless places the sequel’s opening-week performance firmly in the spotlight and gives the film a significant benchmark to build on during its ongoing theatrical run.

Festive boost to opening week

Released on October 15, Jailer 2 arrived in theatres during a period that included the weekend and Dussehra festivities. The holiday period offered audiences additional opportunities to catch the film, contributing to the atmosphere around its opening week.

Rajinikanth leads the ensemble, which also features Ramya Krishnan, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and several other actors in key roles. Nelson Dilipkumar, who directed the first Jailer, returns to helm the sequel, while Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music. The combination of Rajinikanth’s screen presence, action sequences, comedy and an ensemble cast has helped the film attract attention across markets.

Next target: franchise benchmark

With Sun Pictures reporting more than Rs 549 crore worldwide in seven days, Jailer 2 now faces the challenge of sustaining its run through the second week and beyond. The first Jailer reportedly collected around Rs 604 crore worldwide over its theatrical run, giving the sequel a prominent franchise benchmark to chase.
