Rafael Leao Confirms Desire to Leave AC Milan for New European Challenge
Seeking a New Horizon
Rafael Leao, the talismanic forward for AC Milan, has officially confirmed his intent to leave the San Siro in search of a "new challenge in a new league." The decision comes on the heels of a disappointing campaign for the Italian giants, who finished fifth in Serie A and failed to secure a spot in the prestigious UEFA Champions League.
A Legacy of Success at San Siro
Since joining AC Milan from Lille in 2019, Leao has established himself as one of the most impactful players in the squad. Across 291 appearances in all competitions, the Portuguese international has amassed 80 goals and 55 assists. His contribution is underscored by the fact that his 135 total goal involvements since the 2019-20 season are 60 more than any other Milan player during the same period.
However, the 2025-26 season proved more difficult for the forward. Leao started only 25 games and managed just 13 goal involvements, a dip in form that mirrored the club's struggles to compete at the top of the table.
Leao Speaks on His Ambitions
In an interview with Sport TV, the 26-year-old reflected on his time with the Rossoneri and his aspirations for the future. "Personally, I've given everything at AC Milan. It's a club that helped me grow a lot and supported me through tough times," Leao stated.
He continued, "Fortunately, I managed to make my mark in their history. Everyone has ambitions and I dream of a new challenge in a new league. If that happens, I'll be very happy and fulfilled because I did my job at AC Milan."
Focus on International Duty
While the rumors of a transfer swirl, Leao is currently prioritizing his responsibilities with the Portuguese national team as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup campaign. He emphasized that his immediate goal is to help his country succeed on the world stage before finalizing his club future.
"The most important thing now is the World Cup and helping the national team in any way I can," he added. "When the time comes, I'll look at the best options to continue my career and keep competing at the top of European football."
