Noonan warns Cincinnati cannot afford another flat display in playoff chase
Cincinnati’s playoff push reaches a critical point
FC Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan has challenged his team to rediscover its energy as the club tries to halt a five-match winless run and stay in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Cincinnati head to Atlanta United after a 3-1 defeat away to CF Montreal. Daniel Rios put Montreal ahead before Tom Barlow equalised, but Prince Owusu scored twice in a three-minute spell after half-time to secure the victory. Cincinnati sit 10th in the East, outside the playoff places but level on points with New York City FC.

‘You have to bring the energy’
Noonan said Cincinnati could not take any opponent lightly, regardless of absences or league position. “We’re not good enough to overlook anybody,” he said, describing the team’s lack of intensity against Montreal as confusing.
The coach said changes to the lineup were under consideration as he looks for a way to lift the group. He added that some players appeared tired or unsure of themselves, and stressed that “you have to care” and bring confidence to performances, whatever the standings or perceived talent gap.
Cincinnati have not missed the playoffs since 2021, but Noonan warned that the team’s attitude must improve if it is to avoid falling short this time.
Atlanta also chasing a postseason place
The next test is at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against an Atlanta side that remain in contention despite sitting 14th, six points off the playoff positions. Atlanta come into the match after twice coming from behind to draw 2-2 with New York City FC.
Atlanta defender Elias Baez said the team would keep fighting for a playoff berth and called on supporters to help make home matches a source of strength. He also reflected on adjusting to life in the United States after joining from San Lorenzo in February.
The matchup presents contrasting recent trends: Atlanta have scored multiple goals in eight of their last 12 regular-season matches, while Cincinnati have won only one of 14 regular-season away games in 2026 and are winless in their last eight on the road. Atlanta have lost only twice in eight previous home meetings with Cincinnati. The supplied Opta forecast gives Cincinnati a 38.2% chance of winning, against 35.7% for Atlanta and 26.1% for a draw.
Evander is among Cincinnati’s key attacking threats, with 26 goal contributions this season—13 goals and 13 assists—second in MLS behind Lionel Messi, according to the match preview.
