Messi receives emotional Argentina farewell in Buenos Aires — but Barcelona's Camp Nou goodbye remains on hold

On Tuesday night, the footballing world paused to watch history unfold. At the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires — the venue that had been previewed for this occasion as far back as 23 September, when the international-break guide flagged Messi's emotional farewell appearance there — Lionel Messi stepped out in the iconic national shirt for his official home farewell match against Benin. The game had been widely billed in advance, including in a BBC Sport programme preview on 29 September, as his final appearance for Argentina, bringing a landmark international chapter towards its conclusion.

Surrounded by tens of thousands of adoring fans and his FIFA World Cup-winning teammates, the GOAT received the proper international send-off he earned. But for FC Barcelona supporters, the striking moment carried a sharp reminder of unfinished business. While Argentina showered their captain with gratitude and love, Barcelona fans are left waiting. The grand goodbye — a packed Camp Nou chanting his name one last time under the floodlights — has yet to happen, and there is still no confirmed date for it.

Why 2021 still hurts

Messi's departure from Camp Nou remains a painful moment in modern club history. To understand why a proper farewell is so necessary, you have to look back to August 2021. Messi did not leave because he wanted a new challenge at Paris Saint-Germain. He left because the club collapsed financially under the weight of previous mismanagement. He arrived in Catalonia to sign his contract, but instead was told at the final moment that league financial rules made the deal impossible — and that he should look for a new team.

Instead of a full stadium bidding farewell to a man who delivered dozens of trophies and hundreds of goals, the world watched a hastily arranged, tearful press conference as the goodbye for all the memories. The visual of Messi wiping away tears before leaving for Paris became the sad final image of his time at the club. It was abrupt. It was not befitting of his glittering legacy.

Laporta's promise — and the broken trust

Since that summer, club president Joan Laporta has insisted that Barcelona will make amends. The message from the president has been consistent: once the redevelopment of the Camp Nou is complete, Barcelona will host the grandest homage in football history.

Complicating matters, trust between Messi's camp and the Laporta administration broke down during the contract collapse. An unsuccessful attempt to bring Messi back in 2023, after he left PSG, further complicated things. Barça promised him that they would officially sign him once they received the all-clear from the league again — but this time, Messi did not wait around to see if the club would deliver. He left and joined Inter Miami in MLS, the team he is with to this day.

The timing puzzle: a stadium still under construction, and a 2028 target

The two sides will have to make peace in order for the match to happen. But Messi has never hidden his affection for his club — the club he joined as a youngster and left as a legend.

If an official tribute ever happens, the timing depends on the stadium being ready and Messi's schedule. Camp Nou has partially reopened following extensive renovations and is open for matches right now, but there is still work to be done that would put it out of commission again next year. One potential target for a tribute match could be early 2028, when the Camp Nou fully reopens after the roof is fully installed.

Any potential match would also need to fit around his commitments with Inter Miami — where, per FotMob data fetched on 9 October, Messi has recorded 21 goals and 11 assists in 24 Major League Soccer appearances in 2026 — and his eventual retirement from professional football, which has not been announced but is sadly creeping ever closer.
