Manjot Kalra's Legal Battle Continues

Former India Under-19 World Cup hero Manjot Kalra will remain in custody in Sri Lanka after a Colombo court rejected his bail application in connection with an alleged match-fixing case involving the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026. The court's decision maintains his remand until July 31 while investigators continue their probe into the high-profile corruption allegations.

Medical Grounds Rejected

Defence counsel K.W.S. Fernando argued for Kalra's release on medical grounds, citing unwell conditions. However, Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama upheld the prosecution's stance that the investigation by the Sri Lanka Police's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is still in progress. The ruling marks another setback for Kalra, who rose to fame with a match-winning century in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup final.

Expanding Match-Fixing Allegations

The case stems from allegations that players in the LPL 2026 were approached to manipulate matches. Initially, Sri Lanka internationals Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, and Dunith Wellalage filed complaints. Two additional players have since joined the investigation, bringing the total to five. Authorities claim to have recorded evidence of the alleged approaches.

Franchise Ownership Changes

The controversy has led to the termination of the Jaffna Kings franchise agreement with Sports Commune due to financial obligations. Innovative Production Group (IPG) and Sri Lanka Cricket now oversee the franchise to ensure the tournament's continuity. Kalra had become a co-owner of the franchise alongside entrepreneur Mayank Goel.

The Lanka Premier League 2026, featuring 24 matches across five franchises, began on July 17 and concludes August 8. Kalra's legal fate now depends on the investigation's outcome as the tournament progresses.
