Saim Ayub released from Pakistan ODI squad mid-tri-series to work on batting form

PCB accepts Ayub’s request after poor run in Lahore and Rawalpindi

Pakistan batter Saim Ayub has been released from the national squad for the ongoing ODI tri-series against England and Sri Lanka after requesting time to work on his batting.

The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed on Monday that the left-handed opener wants to return to domestic cricket to improve his form and rebuild his confidence. Ayub has struggled in the ongoing series, scoring three consecutive single-digit totals in as many matches — 6, 8 and 7 in his three innings.

Saim Ayub released from Pakistan ODI squad

"After a conversation with the head coach, Saim requested a desire to return to domestic cricket to work on his batting form and regain confidence," the PCB said in a statement.

The board supported the player’s decision to address his difficulties before returning to international cricket.

"Respecting Saim's decision and appreciating his honest assessment of his current form, the team management and national selection committee have mutually agreed to accept this request," the statement read. The release noted the 24-year-old spoke with head coach Mike Hesson before making the request.

Sahibzada Farhan drafted in as replacement

Pakistan have brought Sahibzada Farhan into the squad as Ayub's replacement for the remaining matches. Farhan, who was recently appointed Pakistan's T20I captain, was not part of the original squad for the tri-series.

The move comes as Pakistan remain in a strong position in the competition. They have won all three of their matches and secured a place in the final after defeating England in a thrilling contest at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.

Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in their next game at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday, October 27, before the final on October 31.

Pakistan's unbeaten run to the final

Despite Ayub's departure, Pakistan are the only unbeaten team in the tri-series. They began with a 37-run victory over Sri Lanka after scoring 305 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. They then defeated England by 87 runs at the same venue, posting 302/9.

Shadab Khan was the star of Pakistan's latest win, scoring his maiden ODI century in a remarkable chase against England. Pakistan successfully chased down 242, winning by one wicket in the 48th over. Shadab remained unbeaten on 113 off 96 balls and shared an unbroken 89-run partnership for the final wicket with Haris Rauf, who contributed seven runs.
