Four Wins and a Draw: Bangladesh's World Test Championship Final Equation Starts Against West Indies

Bangladesh's two-Test series against West Indies, starting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on October 28, is the first step of the most demanding stretch of the current World Test Championship cycle — and the margins are now brutally thin.

The arithmetic

Sitting fourth in the ICC World Test Championship standings, Bangladesh have three two-Test series remaining: the home assignment against West Indies, an away trip to South Africa, and a home campaign against England next year.

That leaves six Tests. To secure a place in the final, Bangladesh must win at least four of them — and draw one.

Head coach Phil Simmons framed the challenge in terms of opportunity rather than pressure, saying the squad's focus is absolute.

"I think everyone is very focused on the Test match. I think there's that goal and that desire to play in the World Test Championship final and this is the first time we've had that opportunity to be there and I think everyone is going to be up and ready for the Test matches."

Why the margin for error has shrunk

Bangladesh's most recent Test outing ended in frustration: a failure to take seven wickets against Afghanistan in the one-off Test in the UAE, a result that undercut their position inside the top four of the Championship table. With qualification hinging on a near-perfect return across six matches, dropped points in a fixture many expected them to dominate carry extra weight.

Bangladesh's squad: Taskin back, Rana out

Bangladesh's 15-member squad for the first Test, named on October 23, features a recall for pace bowler Taskin Ahmed, who replaces Khaled Ahmed. Soumya Sarkar was dropped, while Nahid Rana was ruled out of the opening Test.

Litton Kumar Das, who had been sidelined by a hip injury, was named in the squad as available again — though Simmons struck a note of caution on the eve of the match: "As far as I know, Litton Kumar is available. Over the next two days, if things change, I'll let you all know, but right now he's available."

Preparation time has been limited, with a number of the squad's multi-format players joining the Test camp only after their tri-nation series commitments. Simmons admitted the arrangement was not ideal, but pointed out that the players had remained in competitive cricket throughout.

"We didn't get the whole team because we were in the middle of a series... So no, it's not the total ideal situation but the guys weren't sitting down as they were playing cricket."

West Indies arrive without Joseph and Hope

West Indies, as reported on October 14, will be without Alzarri Joseph and Shai Hope for the tour. Joseph was withdrawn from the two-Test series for workload management, while white-ball captain Shai Hope was rested.

Keemo Paul comes into the 15-man squad in place of Joseph, and Kevin Wickham earns a first Test call-up. The first Test in Mirpur remains scheduled to begin on October 28.

What comes next

Anything less than a strong home return against West Indies would leave Bangladesh needing an outstanding away performance in South Africa to keep their final hopes alive before England visit. The equation, put simply, allows for almost nothing else.
