Brittney Griner's personal life has been thrust back into the public eye as her divorce from Cherelle Griner moves through the courts, with the estranged ex-wife reportedly demanding continued financial support from the WNBA star — a legal battle that has also revived interest in Griner's first, short-lived marriage to fellow player Glory Johnson.

The financial dispute at the centre of the divorce

According to reported court documents, Cherelle has said there is a "substantial disparity" between her income and Griner's, and has reportedly stated that she would be "unable to meet her reasonable financial needs on a monthly basis without continued support."

The gap is stark. Griner currently plays for the Connecticut Sun, having signed a reported one-year contract worth $1.19 million, while Cherelle works as a law clerk in Atlanta.

The financial dispute comes after Griner filed for divorce on July 30, 2026, listing July 24 as their separation date and describing the marriage as "irretrievably broken." Cherelle has used similarly final language, describing the marriage as "irretrievably broken with no hope for reconciliation."

She is seeking joint custody of the couple's son, Bash Raymond Griner. The divorce proceedings remain ongoing, with custody and financial support now the central issues.

A 28-day marriage to Glory Johnson

Before her marriage to Cherelle, Griner was briefly married to fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson — a chapter of her life that has resurfaced amid the current proceedings.

Griner and Johnson, both professional basketball players, became engaged in 2014. In April 2015, the two were arrested following a domestic dispute involving assault and disorderly conduct. Despite the incident, they went ahead with their wedding on May 8, 2015.

The marriage proved extremely short-lived. Just 28 days after the wedding, Griner filed for an annulment, citing fraud and duress — a move that came shortly after Johnson announced she was pregnant with twins. The pair eventually divorced in June 2016 and share twin daughters.

Griner and Cherelle: from Baylor to the White House

Griner later reconnected with Cherelle, whom she had first met while the two were undergraduate students at Baylor University. The pair became romantically involved after Griner's first marriage ended and went on to become one of the WNBA's most visible couples.

Cherelle stood by Griner through some of the most difficult moments of her life. In 2022, Griner was detained in Russia after being arrested at a Moscow airport and spent 10 months in Russian custody. Cherelle became a prominent public advocate for her release, speaking publicly about Griner's situation and meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House. Griner returned to the United States in December 2022 following a prisoner swap.

The couple later appeared together at several major events, including the 2023 White House Correspondents Dinner and the Met Gala, and in July 2024 they welcomed their son, Bash.
