Dortmund confirm Karetsas foot ligament injury as Greek omitted from Sabah squad

Borussia Dortmund have named their travelling party for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash against Azerbaijani side Sabah FK in Baku — and confirmed that teenage midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas will not be on the plane.

Konstantinos Karetsas in Borussia Dortmund action

Karetsas picked up the problem in Saturday's goalless Bundesliga draw away at 1. FC Union Berlin, and on the bright side for BVB the issue is not as serious as initially feared. Managing director for sport Lars Ricken revealed the exact diagnosis and confirmed the 18-year-old's absence from both upcoming fixtures.

"Kos has a ligament injury in his foot. He won't be travelling to Baku and will also miss Saturday's match against Frankfurt. That's obviously frustrating, but initially, we feared something worse after seeing the reactions of his teammates."

The setback comes after the Greek international twisted his right ankle just eight minutes after coming on against Union Berlin, as reported on 17 October. Karetsas, who only recently returned to action following a worrying medical episode in September, has endured a difficult start to life in Germany since his €30m summer move from Genk.

Dortmund face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday after the Champions League trip to Baku, with Karetsas ruled out of both encounters.
