Typhoon Dujuan Disrupts India’s Training Ahead of Historic Japan T20I Clash

India’s preparations for their historic first-ever T20 International against Japan suffered a major setback on Monday after adverse weather caused by approaching Typhoon Dujuan forced the squad to wash out their final practice session on the eve of the match.

India cricket team preparations disrupted by typhoon in Japan

Typhoon Dujuan Triggers Severe Weather Warnings

Typhoon Dujuan has been barreling toward Japan's Pacific coastline, triggering torrential rainfall, fierce wind gusts, and heightened landslide risks across the Kanto region, which encompasses Tokyo and adjacent prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency cautioned that conditions could deteriorate rapidly with the formation of linear rain bands capable of causing flash floods. Parts of eastern Japan, including the Izu Islands and Pacific coastal belts, have already recorded upwards of 300 mm of rain since Saturday.

The storm's widespread disruption also forced organisers of the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya to postpone the equestrian eventing competition as a safety precaution.

India Face Unfamiliar Conditions in Tochigi

The Shreyas Iyer-led Indian side is based in Tochigi Prefecture ahead of Tuesday’s landmark encounter at the Sano International Cricket Ground. Styled as the Suzuki Cup, the fixture marks the first official meeting between the two nations in men’s international cricket and forms part of celebrations commemorating 75 years of diplomatic ties between India and Japan.

The cancellation of Monday's training session leaves the Indian contingent heading into the contest without any hands-on experience of the pitch or local ground conditions.

Iyer Anticipates 'Thrilling and Exciting' Clash

Despite the lack of preparation time on the ground, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer spoke warmly about their reception in Japan and voiced his enthusiasm for the landmark fixture.

"It is beautiful. I mean, the time we landed, we saw the people very cordial, generous, and helpful in nature, which we see back at home as well. The hospitality is brilliant, and yeah, I mean, it is too early to talk about it, but I'm sure that I've heard special things from people about Japan as a country and Tokyo as a city as well, so looking forward to explore more," Iyer said in a video released by the BCCI.

Addressing the challenge of stepping onto an unfamiliar pitch, Iyer acknowledged the unknowns: "It is going to be a thrilling and exciting match for us. This is the first time we would be playing Japan, and do not know much about the conditions, the wicket, but looking forward to have a great match."

Asian Games Warm-Up Meets Historic Milestone

For India, the fixture serves as crucial preparation ahead of their Asian Games campaign, which kicks off at the quarterfinal stage on September 28. While India enter the contest as reigning T20 World Cup champions facing a Japan team ranked 41st in the format, the hosts are treating the occasion as a watershed moment.

Japan captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming underlined his side's intent, insisting they are determined to test themselves against elite opposition rather than simply make up the numbers in a ceremonial fixture.
