Record fees and major midfield reinforcements

Arsenal completed a long-awaited move for Bruno Guimaraes, bringing Newcastle United’s captain into a midfield that was already among the league’s strongest. Guimaraes has been both combative and creative for Newcastle, and his leadership and ball-winning ability could reduce the workload on Declan Rice while giving Arsenal another influential presence in possession.

Morgan Rogers has made an even bigger financial leap, leaving Aston Villa for Chelsea in a club-record deal worth £117 million. Rogers was central to Villa’s rise, helping the club qualify for the Champions League twice and win the Europa League. His reunion with former Manchester City academy team-mate Cole Palmer gives Chelsea a potentially formidable creative partnership. Rogers scored on his debut in a 3-1 pre-season victory over Real Sociedad, an early indication of what Chelsea hope he can deliver.

Manchester City spent a club-record £116 million on Elliot Anderson, whose energy, physicality and ability to contribute in every phase made him a cornerstone of Nottingham Forest’s midfield. City are counting on Anderson to restore athleticism to their engine room and help the club challenge again domestically and in Europe.

Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, paid a guaranteed £85 million for Mateus Fernandes after he impressed despite playing for Southampton and West Ham United sides that were relegated in successive seasons. Fernandes combines forward driving with aggressive defensive work and has already shown his long-range threat during pre-season.

Brentford also broke their club record for a midfielder by signing Mamadou Sangare from Lens for €48 million (£41 million). Sangare is arriving in England after helping Lens push Paris Saint-Germain close in Ligue 1. His former club described him as a player who combines the qualities of a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box number eight. He scored in Brentford’s 7-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt during the weekend.

New opportunities for young stars

Aston Villa may have assembled the most intriguing collection of young attacking and midfield talent. Johan Manzambi joined from Freiburg after raising his profile with Switzerland at the World Cup. His ability to carry the ball, play in multiple midfield roles and operate either in a pivot or further forward could be particularly valuable after Villa lost Rogers and Youri Tielemans, while Amadou Onana and Joao Gomes face injury problems.

Villa’s teenage signing Brian Madjo has already produced one of the summer’s biggest introductions. The 17-year-old scored against European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, troubling a defence featuring Marquinhos and Willian Pacho despite Villa eventually losing 2-1. The 21-year-old is viewed as part of the club’s succession plan alongside Giovanni Leoni, with Virgil van Dijk entering the final season of his contract and Konate having departed as a free agent. Daizen Maeda is joining newly promoted Ipswich Town after four and a half seasons at Celtic. The Japan international scored 79 goals in 212 Celtic appearances, including a spectacular overhead kick against Rangers and the title-clinching goal against Hearts last season. His relentless pressing and exceptional work rate could make him a natural fit for the intensity of the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest’s defensive statement signing is Ousmane Diomande, who arrived from Sporting CP for €40 million (£34 million). The 22-year-old centre-back has twice been named in the Primeira Liga team of the year and offers pace, strength, size, athleticism and composure with the ball. His arrival gives Forest a powerful option in a back three.

Leeds United have made James Trafford the most expensive goalkeeper in the club’s history, with the deal worth more than £40 million. Trafford, a Manchester City academy product, was a reserve last season but is widely viewed as a potential successor to Jordan Pickford for England. His shot-stopping, distribution and willingness to advance outside the penalty area offer Leeds a significant upgrade after difficulties involving Illan Meslier and Lucas Perri.
