Aston Martin has entered the 2026 season as the grid's backmarker, a humbling position for a team backed by the design genius of Adrian Newey and the power of Honda. The team's AMR26 has been described as a "complete nightmare" by Newey himself.

A Legacy of 'Bodged' Systems

Newey revealed that the team's struggles were not just aerodynamic, but structural. He admitted the team was relying on outdated tools and processes that had been "patched and bodged for years," some dating back to the 1990s Jordan team. This led to a breakdown in production where parts weren't ordered at the correct times, resulting in an overweight car that arrived late to preseason testing.

The crisis peaked during the Australian Grand Prix, where the car suffered from severe vibrations that left Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll fearing "permanent nerve damage."

The Hungarian Reset

In a bid to recover, Aston Martin eschewed incremental updates and instead brought a massive chassis upgrade to the Hungarian GP. The package involved altering 16 different areas of the car, with a primary focus on weight reduction.

While the results were still modest—with Alonso qualifying 16th—the team believes the correlation between their design data and on-track performance is finally aligning. "The key consideration is that we are back in the game," said chief trackside officer Mike Krack.
