Inter Come From Behind to Beat Fiorentina 2-1 and Post Their Best Serie A Start in a Decade

Inter needed another comeback to keep their grip on first place in Serie A, coming from behind to beat Fiorentina 2-1 at San Siro on Sunday afternoon and remaining top of the table for another week.

The result continued a familiar pattern for Cristian Chivu's side, who have repeatedly had to respond after conceding first this season, and it lifted the Nerazzurri to 22 points from their first eight matches of the 2026-27 campaign.

The best opening in ten seasons — and better than three title wins

According to Football Italia, the eight-game tally is Inter's strongest start to a Serie A season in the last decade, stretching back to the 2017-18 campaign under Luciano Spalletti, and it outstrips the opening pace of each of the club's last three Scudetto-winning seasons.

The comparison with recent history is stark:

  • Seven points better off than at the same stage of last season, when Chivu's team went on to win the title in his first year in charge.
  • Three points better off than at the same point of the 2023-24 season under Simone Inzaghi.
  • Seven points better off than after eight games of the 2020-21 season under Antonio Conte.

For a squad that has made a habit of falling behind before recovering, the numbers suggest a resilience that is translating into results rather than merely into drama.

Four clubs unbeaten after eight games — a Serie A first

Inter are also part of a slice of Italian top-flight history. Along with Lazio, Roma and Milan, they form the first group of four clubs to go eight league games without tasting defeat in Serie A.

Lazio's own run was underlined by their 3-1 home win over Monza on 11 October, a fifth victory in six matches that drew them level with Inter on 16 points at the summit at that stage of the campaign.

Venezia away, then the derby

Chivu's squad will not have long to savour the Fiorentina win. Inter travel to Venezia on Wednesday evening before returning for a highly anticipated Derby della Madonnina against Milan on Saturday — a fixture that now carries extra weight given both sides' unbeaten records.

With a seven-point cushion over their own title-winning pace from a year ago and a two-point-per-game buffer built into their total, Inter head into the week top of Serie A and with the statistics to back up their position.
