Jeff Bezos consortium secures option to buy controlling stake in Liverpool

Bezos-backed group takes minority stake in Liverpool

A consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has acquired an approximately 30 to 33 per cent stake in Liverpool, marking Bezos’ first investment in a sports franchise and opening the possibility of a much larger ownership role.

Liverpool supporters at Anfield

Under the terms agreed with current owners Fenway Sports Group, the investment vehicle, 1892 Holdings, has an option that could allow it to purchase a controlling stake in the club over the next 12 months. Sources familiar with the transaction stressed that the provision is not a binding commitment and should be viewed as a potential route to further investment rather than a guaranteed change of control.

FSG keeps control at Anfield

FSG will remain Liverpool’s majority shareholder and retain operational control of the club. There will be no immediate change to the leadership or day-to-day running of the Merseyside club.

“The strategic investment supports Liverpool FC’s long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology and investment,” FSG said. “FSG continues to retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool FC.”

Bhatia to become vice chairman

The consortium is headed and managed by Amit Bhatia, who previously co-owned Queens Park Rangers. Bhatia will become Liverpool’s vice chairman and join the club’s governance structure alongside Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum of K5 Sports. Bezos himself will not take a seat on the board.

1892 Holdings also includes the family office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife Elaine, as well as the Mittal Family Trusts. Bezos’ investment is being made through the K5 Sports fund.

Bhatia said the group was “incredibly proud” to invest in Liverpool, adding that it had “the utmost respect and admiration” for FSG and intended to support the club’s continued success.
