Spurs Captain Completes €40m Move to Los Colchoneros

Atletico Madrid have officially confirmed the signing of defender Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur, with the LaLiga club paying a reported €40 million (£34 million) for the Argentine centre-back. Romero signed a five-year contract with Diego Simeone's side, bringing an end to a turbulent final chapter at Spurs.

The 27-year-old bid farewell to Tottenham on Friday before completing his move to the Spanish capital on Saturday. Romero's future had been in doubt throughout the summer transfer window, with Spurs reinforcing their defensive ranks by signing centre-backs Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi ahead of their first full season under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

A Tumultuous End at Tottenham

Romero's departure comes after a difficult end to his Spurs tenure. Having been ruled out through injury during the club's relegation battle last season, the defender faced widespread criticism after opting to return to Argentina rather than attend the crucial final-day clash against Everton — a decision he eventually reversed.

Several clubs, including Premier League champions Arsenal, had been linked with Romero since the transfer window opened, but it was Atletico Madrid who ultimately clinched his signature.

A Standout Performer in North London

Romero initially joined Tottenham on loan from Atalanta in 2021 before making the move permanent. Over his time in North London, he made 156 appearances and played a pivotal role in helping Spurs win the Europa League in 2024-25 — the club's first trophy in 17 years.

His statistical impact at Tottenham was immense. Since his debut five years ago, Romero won the most duels among Spurs defenders (873), recorded the most interceptions (223), the most clearances (524), and won the second-most tackles (208). Among Premier League defenders, only Gabriel Magalhaes (18) and Virgil Van Dijk (17) scored more goals than Romero (11) in the competition since the start of the 2021-22 season.

World Cup Campaign with Argentina

Romero also featured prominently for Argentina at this summer's World Cup, starting seven of their eight matches as the Albiceleste finished as runners-up to Spain. He helped his national team keep two clean sheets, won the joint second-most tackles in the squad (10, level with Lionel Messi and behind Alexis Mac Allister's 12), and won 33 of his 50 duels throughout the tournament.

Atletico Madrid, who open their LaLiga campaign against Malaga next Wednesday, will be hoping Romero can bring his combative style and winning pedigree to the Wanda Metropolitano as they look to challenge for domestic and European honours.
