Niko Kovač commits to Borussia Dortmund until 2029 and says he is still hungry for more
Kovač signs new Dortmund deal until 2029
Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač has extended his contract with the club until 2029, the Bundesliga reported. The 54-year-old has won 35 of his 53 Bundesliga matches in charge of BVB and has a higher points-per-game average than any other coach in the club's history.
When Kovač took charge in February 2025, Dortmund sat 11th in the table, having finished fifth the previous campaign. Since then, the five-time Bundesliga winners have been restored as Bayern Munich's fiercest rivals for Germany's top-flight crown.
A club back at the top
The most recent evidence of that resurgence came earlier this season, when Dortmund moved top of the Bundesliga with a disciplined 1-0 win at Stuttgart. That was their fourth straight victory under Kovač, with Maximilian Beier scoring the winner after a set-up from substitute Jobe Bellingham. Managing director Lars Ricken set the modest target of 'annoying Bayern a bit'.
In Europe, Dortmund opened the 2026-27 Champions League campaign with a 3-2 win over Villarreal, but have lost their last three away games in the competition, a run Kovač has been working to address ahead of their trip to Bodø/Glimt.
Kovač's hunger for more is clear: the new contract keeps him at the helm of a club determined to challenge for major honours for years to come.
