Arsenal hit Lille with three-goal burst to preserve perfect Champions League start
Arsenal turn frustration into a decisive win
Arsenal overcame a stubborn Lille side with a three-goal burst after the hour mark, winning 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium and taking their Champions League record to two wins from two matches.
The hosts had struggled to find a way through for much of the opening hour. Bruno Guimaraes sent an effort wide after combining with Noni Madueke and Jurrien Timber, while Mikel Merino headed a Timber cross straight at Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer. Lille thought they had taken the lead through Ayase Ueda, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Eberechi Eze, given a rare start, tested Ozer, and a deflected attempt from Guimaraes was cleared just before half-time. Arsenal continued to press after the break, but their breakthrough did not arrive until shortly after the hour.
Timber starts the scoring run
Madueke played in Timber, whose deft first touch took him away from Lille captain Benjamin Andre. Timber then chipped the advancing Ozer to put Arsenal ahead.
Substitutes Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz soon made an impact. Saka drove forward and supplied Eze, who finished to make it 2-0. Three minutes after the opener, Arsenal had turned a tense contest into a commanding lead.
Saka completed the scoring in the 71st minute, combining with Havertz before finishing for his fourth goal of the season. The three goals came in a seven-minute spell.
Arsenal keep European momentum
Olivier Giroud returned to the Emirates as a late substitute, while teenager Max Dowman also came on. Arsenal have now won both of their Champions League matches this season without conceding, and the report records this as their 14th consecutive group-stage victory.
Arsenal’s next European test is a trip to Germany to face Bayern Munich, with Nottingham Forest due at the Emirates this weekend.
