Jean-Philippe Mateta in dispute with Crystal Palace over contract extension after FIFA and Premier League rulings

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is locked in a bitter contractual dispute with the club after legal challenges to his contract extension were rejected by both the Premier League and FIFA.

The dispute centers on a one-year option that Palace triggered in December 2024, extending the 29-year-old forward's stay at Selhurst Park until June 2027 rather than letting him walk away as a free agent at the end of last season. Palace had held prolonged discussions over fresh terms throughout 2024 and 2025, but after failing to find an agreement due to substantial financial differences, the club chose to activate the clause to protect his market valuation.

Tribunal and FIFA Rulings Fall in Palace's Favor

Mateta contested the validity of the option, taking his case before an independent Premier League tribunal. The tribunal concluded earlier this year that the contract remained legally binding. Unconvinced, the French forward sought recourse through FIFA's dispute resolution chamber, which ruled in recent days that it did not possess the jurisdiction to hear the case, cementing Palace's contractual authority.

The forward previously saw a proposed move to AC Milan collapse during the winter transfer window. The Italian giants had agreed to a package worth over €30 million (£26m), but withdrew following concerns raised during medical examinations regarding a knee issue. Mateta subsequently opted against surgery to ensure his selection in Didier Deschamps' France squad for the summer World Cup, where he made three substitute appearances.

Transfer Market Dilemma

Palace, who added Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a club-record £43 million deal in January, remain open to a sale if their asking price is matched. The club is holding out for an offer in the region of Milan's previous valuation before sanctioning a departure.

Aston Villa retain loose interest in Mateta as a contingent option should Ollie Watkins depart before the deadline. However, with new manager Pierre Sage steering Palace through a campaign that includes Europa League football, resolution on Mateta's future remains critical to avoiding unwanted off-pitch distractions.
