Rob Key backs Brydon Carse return and explains England's record 39-contract shake-up on TMS

Key backs Carse return as England reshape contracts and coaching

England managing director of men's cricket Rob Key has insisted Brydon Carse can still feature for England, as he walked listeners through the side's record 39-player central contract list and the newly split coaching structures on the Test Match Special podcast.

Speaking to host Henry Moeran alongside BBC cricket correspondent Stephan Shemilt and former England opener Dawid Malan, Key was pressed on whether the 31-year-old Carse will play for England again. Carse was retained among the 39 players named for the 2026-27 season despite an ongoing investigation, after earlier reporting on 12 October confirmed Key's view that the fast bowler "can return" as England expanded the contract pool.

Key also lifted the lid on how England's central contracts operate, following the announcement on 12 October of a record list comprising 30 main deals and nine development deals. First-time central contracts were awarded to Tom Banton, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Emilio Gay, Matthew Fisher and Dan Lawrence, while off-spinner Shoaib Bashir kept his place as the only specialist red-ball spinner on the list.

One talking point was why Henry Crocombe earned a central contract before making a senior England appearance. Key explained on the podcast that the development pathway allows players to be contracted on the basis of potential and forward planning rather than solely on previous international caps.

On coaching, Key outlined the split structures first detailed on 12 October: Stephen Fleming takes the Test team, with Brendon McCullum remaining in charge of the white-ball sides. Two-year extensions were handed to Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jofra Archer and Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox was given a straight two-year call-up, and one-year deals went to Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and the returning Ollie Robinson.

"Does Rob think Brydon Carse will play for England again? How do central contracts work? Why has Henry Crocombe received a deal when he hasn't played for England yet? And what of the changes to the coaching setups of the red and white-ball teams?" the programme asked ahead of the 40-minute episode.
