Tottenham Bolster Defense with Signing of Andy Robertson After Liverpool Exit
Spurs Secure Experienced Left-Back
Following a challenging 2025-26 campaign where they narrowly avoided Premier League relegation, Tottenham Hotspur have made a significant move to strengthen their defensive line. The club has officially completed the signing of seasoned full-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer.
Robertson, 32, joins the North London club after a trophy-laden nine-year tenure with Liverpool. During his time on Merseyside, the Scotland international became a cornerstone of the Reds' success under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, making 378 appearances and securing nine major honors, including the Champions League and two Premier League titles.
A Proven Winner for De Zerbi
The move marks the first signing for new Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi, who views Robertson as a critical addition to a squad coming off a dismal season. Robertson's ability to create chances remains a highlight of his game; since his 2017 debut, he has registered 56 Premier League assists, the second-highest among defenders behind only Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Speaking on the acquisition, De Zerbi stated: "Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years, and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team. He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch."
Addressing Defensive Vulnerabilities
The urgency for defensive reinforcements was evident last season, as Tottenham conceded 57 goals—a tally surpassed only by Burnley, Wolves, and West Ham. Robertson's arrival is seen as a step toward stabilizing a backline that nearly saw the club relegated before a final-day victory over Everton secured their status.
Spurs sporting director Johan Lange praised the signing, noting: "First and foremost, he is an outstanding left-back – one of the best of all time in the Premier League, and someone who will improve our squad."
Future Outlook
Robertson is expected to officially link up with his new teammates following the conclusion of the World Cup, where he is currently captaining the Scotland national team.
In addition to Robertson, reports suggest Tottenham is continuing to eye the market, with interest in Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke. However, the Dutch defender is reportedly valued at around £70m, and an initial bid has already been rejected by the Seagulls.
