Markus Krösche bids emotional farewell to Eintracht Frankfurt after surprise exit

A surprise exit with a troubled backdrop

Markus Krösche's separation from Eintracht Frankfurt was officially announced on Sunday, October 18, ending an association that began in 2021. Although the timing came as a surprise, the situation had been building for some time. Reports of disagreements with returning head coach Adi Hütter had accompanied growing uncertainty over the sporting executive's position, and the summer transfer window had exposed problems in the club's recruitment strategy.

Tensions were compounded by several episodes: his appointment of Albert Riera as head coach earlier this year proved contentious and failed to deliver sporting progress; Hütter's return highlighted shifting power dynamics within the club; discussions with AC Milan during the summer reportedly created further friction, as the supervisory board learned of the interest through media reporting; and a Croatian property transaction involving Krösche and the wife of player agent Andy Bara led to internal and external legal reviews that fully cleared him of wrongdoing, though the failure to inform the board beforehand contributed to dissatisfaction.

"I no longer had the drive"

Monday evening's general meeting at the Jahrhunderthalle, attended by approximately 1,300 club members, offered a different picture. The 46-year-old delivered an unusually emotional farewell address, acknowledging that his professional demeanour could sometimes make him appear cold or detached, but insisting this did not reflect his feelings for the club.

He explained that after reflecting on his responsibilities he no longer believed he possessed the necessary drive and effectiveness to meet Frankfurt's required standards. "A club of Frankfurt's stature required a sporting executive capable of approaching the job with complete commitment and conviction," he said, adding that he could no longer guarantee this, which prompted his request to leave.

His address recalled the 2022 Europa League triumph, the European matches against Barcelona, the Champions League campaigns and the 2023 DFB-Pokal final. Members rose to their feet and applauded for almost two minutes.

Compensation and next steps

Frankfurt have reportedly secured an agreement requiring his next employer to pay compensation in the region of €4m to €6m. AC Milan remain a possible destination, although Kicker reports that people close to the executive expect him to take some time away from football before accepting another position.

A remarkable transfer legacy

Krösche leaves having overseen one of the most successful periods in the club's modern history, including the 2022 Europa League win, multiple Champions League qualifications, sustained European involvement and substantial revenues from player sales, although the club's transfer strategy also brought costly mistakes.
