Torrents follows Ter Stegen to Amsterdam

Barcelona have agreed a deal with Ajax for the season-long loan of highly-rated teenage left-back Jofre Torrents, making the 19-year-old the second member of Hansi Flick's first-team ranks to head for the Johan Cruyff Arena in the space of 24 hours.

The agreement comes hot on the heels of Marc-André ter Stegen's long-touted move to the Dutch capital, with the German goalkeeper's loan switch for the campaign ahead having been made official just a day earlier. Business between the boards at Barça and Ajax has taken centre stage in the headlines across Europe this week.

Breakout campaign cut short by injury

Torrents is fresh off something of a breakout season in Catalunya. After catching the eye of Flick, the La Masia graduate began 2025/26 as the starting left-back while Alejandro Balde recovered from a pre-season knock, going on to rack up four first-team appearances before a serious mid-season ankle injury halted his progress.

Now fully fit, the defender remains held in high regard at the club, with Barcelona's coaching staff considering him a potential future starter at Camp Nou.

Cancelo arrival forces Barça's hand

The imminent signing of João Cancelo, coupled with Balde's presence in the squad, would have made first-team minutes hard to come by for Torrents this season. However, the La Liga champions believe the teenager is too good to spend the year in the fourth tier with Barça Atlètic, making a carefully chosen loan the ideal solution.
