'I just want to be available for all games' - Mayank Yadav's comeback journey ahead of IPL 2025

Mayank Yadav's Road to Recovery: From Injury Woes to IPL Comeback

Mayank Yadav, the young fast-bowling sensation who took Indian cricket by storm in 2024, is preparing for a significant comeback in the upcoming IPL season after enduring a challenging period of injuries and rehabilitation. The Lucknow Super Giants pacer, who managed just six IPL games across two seasons and three T20Is for India in October 2024, has undergone surgery and extensive rehab to put his career back on track.

The Injury Battle and Recovery Process

Mayank revealed that he suffered a stress fracture in his back, which kept him out of action for an extended period. "I had a stress fracture in my back, which is why I was out for a long time," the 23-year-old explained. After playing just two matches in the previous IPL season, he underwent surgery and has since been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy's Centre of Excellence (NCA-CoE).

When asked about his current readiness, Mayank expressed confidence: "I am 100 percent ready right now; my injury is completely fine. I had surgery last year after the two matches I played in the IPL. It's all fine."

Maintaining Pace and Intensity

One of the biggest concerns surrounding Mayank's comeback has been whether he can maintain the express pace that made him an overnight sensation. The young speedster addressed these concerns directly: "Yeah, definitely, definitely. The physios and the trainers at the CoE did a brilliant job, and I'm able to bowl at 100 percent after the surgery."

He admitted to initial concerns about his bowling post-surgery: "I was a bit concerned about how my bowling would be post surgery, but it's back on track."

The Mental and Physical Journey

Mayank emphasized that his recovery involved both physical and mental aspects. "The work I've put in over the last 8-9 months during rehab has been significant," he said. "It takes a lot of effort, especially since this was my first major surgery, so it was a very different situation for me."

Regarding the mental aspect of bowling at extreme pace, Mayank shared: "A lot, actually. I can't speak for others - it's an individual thing - but for me, a day before a match or even a practice session, I would tell myself that I have to bowl fast the next day. So, mental preparation is very important to handle that impact on the body. For me, it's crucial."

Prevention and Future Focus

To prevent recurrences of such injuries, Mayank is focusing on recovery and diet. "So, the only thing I can do is focus on my recovery and diet. That's what I'm concentrating on - my food, sleep and the recovery work I've been doing with the trainer over the past three years. That's my main focus right now."

He acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining extreme pace: "Obviously it's not easy to bowl at 155 and stay fit throughout."

Franchise Support and Discovery Story

Mayank expressed deep gratitude towards Lucknow Super Giants for their support during his injury period. "I think they have shown complete trust in me, whether I'm injured or playing. Especially the owner (Sanjiv Goenka) - he has helped me a lot. Even during rehab, he would message me to check how things were going, how my body was feeling."

He also shared the story of his discovery: "I think I was playing for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Delhi and UP were practising together in Chandigarh, at the Mohali stadium. I think that's where Vijay Dahiya saw me, and he passed my name on to the right people, and from there they discovered me."

Looking Ahead to IPL 2025

With the arrival of former India bowling coach Bharat Arun at LSG, Mayank is optimistic about his development. "It is helping a lot because we have quite a bit of experience with him. He has worked with many different types of fast bowlers in our country. He understands how to develop a bowler who can bowl at 150 and one who operates around 140, so he brings a lot of experience."

When asked about his targets for the season and future, Mayank kept it simple yet ambitious: "I just want to be available for all the games this season. And one more thing - I want to win the (IPL) trophy."

At just 23 years old with age on his side, Mayank Yadav represents not just a comeback story but also the promise of what could be if he can stay fit and translate his raw pace into consistent performances. His journey from injury rehabilitation to IPL readiness serves as an inspiring narrative ahead of the new season.
