Bashar Eyes Long-Term Comeback for Shakib Al Hasan as BCB Selection Chief
Habibul Bashar, the newly appointed chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) national selection panel, has expressed his commitment to following his instincts in decision-making, even in the face of criticism. Appointed on March 23, Bashar returns to a familiar role, having previously served on the panel from 2011 to 2024 under various chief selectors before a brief stint in game development.
During his first official press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium (SBNS) on Tuesday, Bashar underscored his resolve against external pressures. "I know I won't be right all the time as I am human and can make errors. But when it comes to my judgments I will do what my heart says. If I have to hear words [criticism] for it, I am willing to take it," he told reporters.

Bashar, who will officially take over duties next month, addressed queries about star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan's potential return. While not focusing on the upcoming New Zealand series, Bashar highlighted a broader vision. "I don't think about Shakib coming for a single series and then leaving. If we can get service from him, we will want that he provides that for a long time," he said.
Emphasizing preparation, Bashar noted Shakib's need for adequate buildup, given his current form and involvement in cricket. "From what I know about him, he is not a guy who will come tomorrow and play the day after. He needs preparation too. It's not a place of emotion. Definitely if we are thinking about Shakib, we will think in the long-term," Bashar added. He envisions Shakib contributing up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, dismissing short-term appearances.
Bashar's primary goal is securing Bangladesh's direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Currently ninth in ODI rankings, the team under captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz must reach the top eight. "I mean our first target is to qualify directly. That is the primary target. But more important than that is that we are consistent in performance," he stated.
To achieve this, Bashar plans to expand the player pool beyond the core 14-15 members, incorporating 10-15 additional talents amid a packed schedule of back-to-back series. However, he stressed that expansion won't compromise results. "Bangladesh team plays to win every match. There is nothing to sacrifice there," he affirmed, advocating for gradual integration of new players alongside veterans like Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim, whose extended careers benefit the side.
Bashar remains unfazed by potential backlash, drawing from his captaincy days. "Whether it is being trolled or being criticized by the press I am not bothered about it... my main job is to work with the team," he concluded, signaling a focused approach to rebuilding Bangladesh cricket's future.
