Newcastle Complete £25.7m Signing of Braga Goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek on Five-Year Deal

Newcastle Bolster Goalkeeping Ranks with Hornicek Arrival

Newcastle United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from SC Braga on a five-year contract that will keep him at St. James' Park until June 2031. The 24-year-old becomes the Magpies' fifth acquisition of the transfer window in a deal reportedly worth £25.7 million (€30 million).

Lukas Hornicek in Braga goalkeeper kit

Hornicek is Newcastle's second goalkeeping signing of the summer, following the arrival of Ewen Jaouen from French club Reims. The Czech international came through Braga's academy system and made his first-team debut during the 2021-22 season in a Taca de Portugal victory.

Impressive Statistics from Portuguese Campaign

During his time at Braga, Hornicek made 88 appearances across all competitions, keeping 37 clean sheets. Last season proved particularly impressive for the shot-stopper, as he recorded 12 clean sheets in the Primeira Liga while helping Braga secure a fourth-place finish.

His statistical output was among the best in European football:

  • 74 saves from 107 shots on target faced (69.2% save rate)
  • 51 clearances – more than any other goalkeeper in the Portuguese top-flight
  • Seven shutouts in the Europa League – more than any other goalkeeper in the competition
  • 45 keeper sweepings with a 100% success rate – second-best in Europe's top 10 leagues behind Barcelona's Joan Garcia

Hornicek also played a crucial role in Braga's Europa League campaign last season, helping them reach the semi-finals before losing out to Freiburg on a place in the final.

"An Emotional Rollercoaster"

Speaking to Newcastle's official website, Hornicek expressed his excitement about the move to the Premier League.

"The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move, and now I'm so happy to be here. It's a brilliant opportunity in a new league, which I'm very excited about."

He added: "From the very first moment I arrived here, I received a fantastic welcome and really felt the warmth of the club. Everyone has been brilliant in helping me settle in."

The goalkeeper acknowledged the reputation of Newcastle's famous home ground, stating: "I know Newcastle is a huge football city, with 52,000 fans at St. James' Park creating an incredible atmosphere and pushing the team every game. I can't wait to play in front of them."

Season Ahead

Newcastle United will begin their Premier League campaign against Liverpool on August 23. The club continues to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, with Hornicek expected to provide competition and depth in the goalkeeping position.
