Jordan Henderson has completed a free transfer to Chelsea, signing a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge following his departure from Brentford — and the veteran midfielder says he cannot wait to work under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

Experience arrives in west London

The 36-year-old follows Danny Welbeck as the latest seasoned campaigner to join the Blues, as Alonso moves to add experience to his youthful squad. Remarkably, Chelsea have not given a single minute to a player over the age of 30 in any of their last 123 matches in all competitions — a run stretching back to 39-year-old Thiago Silva's final appearance in May 2024.

For Henderson, the move represents a full-circle moment. The midfielder made his professional debut at Stamford Bridge while playing for Sunderland, featuring in a 5-0 defeat to Chelsea back in November 2008. Since that Premier League bow, only James Milner (481) has made more appearances in the competition than Henderson (463).

"An honour to play under him"

Henderson revealed he spoke with Alonso — who arrived at Chelsea this summer following his exit from Real Madrid in January — before putting pen to paper, and came away thoroughly impressed.

"We had a very good chat," Henderson told the club website. "I had huge admiration for Xabi as a player, and now I have huge admiration for him as a manager. What he's done over the last few years has been pretty special.

"Everyone that I know that has either worked with him or played with him has said very good things. Not one person had a bad thing to say about him. That speaks for him very highly.

"Then when I spoke to him, I got a very good feeling that it would be an honour to come and play under him."

Alonso's impressive pedigree

Alonso's reputation is backed up by his results in the dugout. Prior to his departure from Madrid, the Spaniard won 24 of his 34 matches in charge of Los Blancos (D4 L6), with his side scoring 72 times across those games.

Before that, he etched his name into history at Bayer Leverkusen, masterminding an unbeaten domestic campaign in 2023-24 that delivered the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal, with a Europa League final defeat the only blemish on a remarkable season.

With Henderson now on board, Alonso will hope the midfielder's wealth of Premier League experience can help guide Chelsea's talented young squad in the campaign ahead.
