Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates and Lea Tahuhu Retirements Usher in New Era for White Ferns

White Ferns Enter Transition Phase

The opening T20 International against Australia at North Sydney Oval offered a first proper glimpse of a new-look New Zealand side, one forged in the aftermath of the retirements of key veterans Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates and Lea Tahuhu following a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in the UK last June and July.

Despite the turnover in personnel, the White Ferns pushed the reigning T20 World Cup champions to the brink, with Georgia Plimmer emerging as a breakout star of the new generation. The 22-year-old struck a career-high 85 off 68 balls alongside Maddy Green, who made 56 from 37 balls, as the pair combined for an unbeaten 127-run partnership in 80 balls.

Rebuild Comes With Growing Pains

It was a breakout innings for Plimmer, her fourth T20 half-century in 54 matches for New Zealand. Going into the game she had an average of 16 and a strike rate of 104, underlining just how significant a step forward the knock represented for the young top-order batter.

But the result served as a reminder of the growing pains of transition. New Zealand posted a record-equalling total in Australia but still fell short, with the White Ferns now having lost six of their past nine matches. Australia, by contrast, extended their run to 11 consecutive T20 wins before closing out a two-wicket victory.

The three-match Rose Bowl series continues with the second T20I at North Sydney Oval on Tuesday and the third on Thursday.
