Teenager Jason Rowles tops SA20 auction as Joburg Super Kings land Du Plessis and Pollard

Rowles leads the auction after fierce bidding

South African prospect Jason Rowles, aged 18, became the headline signing of the SA20 Season 5 auction in Johannesburg after Joburg Super Kings outbid MI Cape Town to secure him for $174,248. The South Africa Under-23 player is a graduate of the rain Schools SA20 programme and will join an experienced JSK dressing room.

SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith called Rowles “the highlight of the day,” saying the contest for the teenager showed the franchises’ belief in the next generation. Smith said it was encouraging to see a player who had appeared in the Schools SA20 final the previous year now earn a place alongside leading T20 names.

Du Plessis returns to JSK

Joburg Super Kings also won the auction for former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, paying $162,286 after competition from MI Cape Town. The 42-year-old returns to the Wanderers, where he has played during the first four SA20 seasons. West Indies star Kieron Pollard joined him at JSK for $90,162.

JSK added USA batter Andries Gous and Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as it continued to build its squad around established international experience and overseas recruits.

MI Cape Town and other franchises strengthen

MI Cape Town’s significant acquisitions included South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for $156,274 and West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer for $90,162. New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult and 21-year-old Oliver Whitehead were also brought into the squad.

Pretoria Capitals added former Proteas batter Rassie van der Dussen for $30,053 and recruited Temba Bavuma, who is set for a third SA20 stint after featuring in Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s first two title-winning teams.

Three-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape completed their 19-player squad by adding South African left-arm seamer Nandre Burger and England all-rounder Craig Overton. Burger joins a pace group that includes Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Adam Milne and Lutho Sipamla.

Season begins in January

Smith also welcomed the number of Proteas players picked up at the auction, saying a strong league and a strong national team “go hand in hand.” SA20 Season 5 is scheduled to begin on January 17, 2027, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape hosting Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park in Gqeberha in a repeat of the previous season’s final.
