India beat New Zealand to win the Champions Trophy
Rohit’s knock leads India to Champions Trophy glory
India beat New Zealand by four wickets to win the ICC Champions Trophy, capping the tournament’s return after an eight-year absence. Rohit Sharma’s 76 from 83 balls set the pace in the chase and earned him player-of-the-match honours.
Rohit said India had played “some really good cricket throughout the tournament” and credited the team’s batting depth for giving the top order the confidence to attack early. He also praised the support of the crowd and singled out the team’s spinners for their contributions across the competition.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said his side had been beaten by the better team on the day. He felt the Black Caps were “about 20-25 runs short” but praised their effort and fighting spirit. Santner also highlighted Rohit’s work in the first powerplay, calling it the best time to bat.
Ravindra named player of the tournament
Rachin Ravindra received the player-of-the-tournament award after scoring 263 runs, including two centuries. He said New Zealand had played good cricket and credited India as a strong side, while reflecting that losing the final was a reminder that “cricket can be a cruel sport sometimes.”
India’s players pointed to the team effort behind the title. Shubman Gill said his partnership with Rohit had been important, while Virat Kohli praised the younger players for stepping up and said contributions from different players in different matches had made the difference. Varun Chakaravarthy described his impact after a late tournament inclusion as a “dream come true.”
At the presentation, Rohit accepted the Champions Trophy from ICC chairman Jay Shah as India celebrated the title. Santner collected the runners-up medal on behalf of New Zealand.
