Lando Norris Confident He Can Beat Any Driver Amid Max Verstappen-McLaren Rumors
Lando Norris has weighed in on the latest Formula 1 paddock speculation linking four-time World Champion Max Verstappen with a potential move to McLaren. The rumors surfaced following reports that Verstappen’s management held informal discussions with McLaren CEO Zak Brown to explore future opportunities, despite the Dutchman being under contract with Red Bull until 2028.
Norris on McLaren's Growing Appeal
Speaking ahead of the British Grand Prix, Norris viewed the interest from a driver of Verstappen's caliber as a testament to McLaren's current trajectory. “To be honest, a lot of drivers want to come to McLaren, so I don’t know why you just highlight Max!” Norris remarked. “It’s a cool thing. It’s a good thing that a four-time World Champion wants to come on board and wants to potentially join the team.”
While acknowledging the prestige associated with Verstappen, Norris emphasized that his immediate focus remains on his current partnership with teammate Oscar Piastri. The duo has been instrumental in McLaren's recent success, helping the team secure back-to-back Constructors’ Championships in 2024 and 2025, ending a 26-year drought.
Confidence in the Face of Elite Competition
When asked about the prospect of sharing a garage with a driver like Verstappen, Norris remained unfazed and confident in his own pace and skill.
“I do believe I can beat any driver,” Norris stated. “I think what makes Max so incredible is how he is over the course of a season, every single weekend performing to the level that he does is what’s impressive.”
Norris further analyzed the gap between a fast driver and an elite one, noting that while many can secure a pole position, Verstappen's consistency across every session is what sets him apart. However, the Briton welcomed the idea of facing such a challenge in the future, mentioning that competing against the likes of Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, or Fernando Alonso would be a "cool opportunity."
Team Stability
Despite the whispers of a potential driver swap involving Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen—a theory previously rejected by Team Principal Andrea Stella—Norris reiterated his commitment to the papaya squad. He noted that he is excited for his future with McLaren and believes the team is in its strongest shape with the current lineup.
