Jaydev Unadkat returns to Sussex for County Championship finale

Unadkat Set for Sussex Return

Jaydev Unadkat is set to return to England later this week to resume his stint with Sussex in the County Championship. The former India left-arm pacer, who has been associated with the English county since 2023, will head back to Brighton to feature in the remainder of the county's red-ball campaign.

Jaydev Unadkat has been a regular presence at Sussex since 2023

Timing and Schedule

County cricket in England is currently on a break from the red-ball season, with the focus shifted to white-ball competitions including The Hundred and the One-Day Cup. Unadkat, however, is contracted with Sussex only for the County Championship and is expected to rejoin the side when the red-ball competition resumes.

The left-arm pacer is set to return to England this weekend and is expected to feature in Sussex's remaining six County Championship fixtures, beginning with the match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in Birmingham on August 20.

Preparation for Domestic Season

Unadkat featured in two County Championship matches in June before returning to India, having been unavailable for the earlier rounds because of his IPL commitments. Speaking about his return, Unadkat told Cricbuzz:

"It's back to county cricket. I've been representing Sussex for the last four seasons and it will be good preparation for the Indian domestic season."

Impressive Record with Sussex

The left-arm pacer has enjoyed considerable success with the county, claiming 57 wickets in 13 County matches at an average of 17.75 and a strike rate of 38.2, including one five-wicket haul. In his two appearances this season, he picked up eight wickets across four innings.

Unadkat and his Saurashtra teammate Cheteshwar Pujara both represented Sussex during the 2024 Championship season.

Sussex's Championship Standing

Led by England seamer Ollie Robinson, Sussex are currently fifth in Division One of the County Championship, having won four, lost two and drawn two of their eight matches. They have six fixtures remaining in the season.

Other Indians in County Championship

Apart from Unadkat, several other Indian cricketers are featuring in this season's County Championship. Yuzvendra Chahal is playing for Nottinghamshire and Rahul Chahar for Surrey. Kuldeep Yadav, who has featured in the One Day Cup for Yorkshire, and Manav Suthar, who played two County Championship matches for Warwickshire in June, are also due to return for the final stages of the Championship following India's Test tour of Sri Lanka.
