Callum McGregor has launched a scathing assessment of Celtic's Champions League exit, admitting his side "looked scared" after throwing away a four-goal aggregate lead to lose 5-1 to LASK.

The Scottish champions crashed out of the Champions League play-offs in extraordinary fashion at the Raiffeisen Arena, with Samuel Adeniran's extra-time goal sealing a 5-4 aggregate defeat despite Celtic having won the first leg 3-0 in Glasgow.

"We got what we deserved. We were passive all night. We looked scared to go and win the game," the captain told Amazon Prime. "I didn't think we were that good in the first leg either. We scored at good times and got away with it. We have to suck it up. We apologise to our supporters and the club because there's no way we should lose that game."

McGregor put Celtic 4-0 up on aggregate with a 21st-minute strike, but Moses Usor, Robert Ljubicic and Adeniran hauled LASK back before Florian Flecker's 91st-minute header forced extra time. Adeniran completed the turnaround in the second period of extra time, and could have made it a hat-trick but for a saved penalty by Viljami Sinisalo in the 115th minute.

Manager Martin O'Neill took responsibility for the defeat. "I'm responsible for the team, I'm the manager of the side. Going into the game 3-0 up and after scoring, we should have been out of sight. Momentum swings in a game and we weren't able to stem it. It's a massive disappointment."

The result means there will be no Scottish clubs in the Champions League group stage proper for a second successive season — a bitter blow given Celtic's dramatic title triumph on the final day of the Scottish Premiership to overhaul Hearts.
