Chinmay Sutar hits unbeaten 400 in just his second first-class match

Sutar joins an exclusive group with marathon 400

Chinmay Sutar produced a landmark innings for Mizoram, scoring 400 not out against Nagaland in a Ranji Trophy Plate group match at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima. Playing only his second first-class fixture, the 29-year-old reached the milestone from 517 balls, striking 46 fours and seven sixes.

Chinmay Sutar celebrates his historic unbeaten 400 for Mizoram

The innings made Sutar only the second Indian batter to score 400 in a first-class match, after BB Nimbalkar’s unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49. He is the 10th player overall to reach the mark. Sutar also moved past Prithvi Shaw’s 379 for the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history, behind Nimbalkar’s record.

Late push takes Mizoram to 581

Unbeaten on 392 at tea, Sutar reached 400 in the 155th over. Mizoram declared immediately afterwards at 581 for nine. His innings dominated the scorecard: Jehu Anderson was the next-highest contributor with 69, while Sutar shared an unbroken 190-run stand for the 10th wicket with Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak, who finished on 14 not out from 76 balls.

The milestone marked a striking turnaround from Sutar’s first-class debut in the previous round against Manipur at Nadiad, where he was run out for 99. He has also represented Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and played for India’s Under-23 side at the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

Sutar’s family has a Mumbai cricket connection: his father, former off-spinning allrounder Rajesh Sutar, played seven first-class matches and once opened the batting for Mumbai with Sachin Tendulkar. Chinmay has also made his mark in the T20 Mumbai League, winning the 2025 Orange Cap and helping Maratha Royals to consecutive titles. In the 2026 league, he scored 210 runs, including half-centuries in the semi-final and final.
