Colo-Colo sign Cape Verde World Cup star Vozinha on free transfer
A Dream Move for the Veteran Shot-Stopper
Colo-Colo have officially unveiled 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who joins the Chilean side as a free agent following a historic run with Cape Verde at the 2026 World Cup.
Vozinha became a global sensation during the summer tournament, where he helped Cape Verde reach the round of 32. The goalkeeper etched his name into the record books as the oldest player to keep a clean sheet on his World Cup debut, a feat achieved during a gritty 0-0 draw against eventual champions Spain, where he recorded seven saves.
His consistency throughout the group stages—where Cape Verde drew all three matches to qualify in second place—saw him become only the third goalkeeper to record multiple World Cup clean sheets after the age of 40, joining the elite company of legends Peter Shilton and Dino Zoff.
"No Doubts" About Joining the Giants
Despite receiving multiple offers following his World Cup heroics, Vozinha admits that the Chilean club was always his top choice. Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, the goalkeeper emphasized his ambition to play at the highest level.
"The decision was very clear. Despite playing in smaller leagues for clubs that weren't exactly giants, deep down I always told myself I was a 'big club' player," Vozinha stated. "So when Colo-Colo came calling, there was no doubt."
Vozinha expressed that while the World Cup was a career-defining moment, he is now focused on the future. "The World Cup was the best thing that ever happened to me in football, but that is in the past now. Being here representing Colo-Colo, a massive club with a rich history, is the highlight of my club career."
Looking Ahead to the Debut
The experienced keeper is eager to translate his international success into club achievements. "I played against the best national teams in the world, and now I just want to work hard and help this team achieve its goals," he added.
Vozinha could be handed his first appearance for the league leaders this Sunday, as Colo-Colo prepare to face bottom-of-the-table Union La Calera.
