Kimi Antonelli has gone from a rookie who left many questioning whether he was truly a generational talent to the clear favourite for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship — and he is not yet 20 years old.

Through the opening 11 rounds of the season, the Italian Mercedes driver leads the standings by 50 points over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, has six grand prix wins, six pole positions, and what team boss Toto Wolff described as a remarkable "serenity" behind the wheel. His advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell, the preseason title favourite, stands at 59 points.

From rookie struggles to championship dominance

Twelve months ago, Antonelli did not even make The Athletic's top-10 midseason driver rankings. He was outscored by Russell 319-150 in 2025, and his campaign was littered with mistakes and a visible lack of confidence. The highlight was a Sprint pole in Miami and podium finishes in Canada, Brazil and Las Vegas — flashes of brilliance buried beneath inconsistency.

The transformation in 2026 has been staggering. Data from F1.com shows that Antonelli's average qualifying pace gap to Russell has swung from more than 0.3 seconds behind in 2025 to over 0.2 seconds quicker this season. He beat the more experienced Briton in qualifying at seven of the first 11 rounds, taking pole at six of them. The greatest improvement came in Belgium, where he experienced one of his largest deficits last year but was comfortably ahead in 2026.

"What we're seeing in 2026 is Formula 1 operating at a level that has never been the case before," said McLaren team principal Andrea Stella. "The overall gain in terms of pure performance development is there again, but performance delivery to track is to a higher level than I've ever seen before."

Rivals full of praise

After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Verstappen was asked which driver had produced the best performance in the first half of the season. He did not hesitate.

"I think, if you look at the front, Kimi has done a really good job," said the four-time world champion. "Really strong, really solid, being the strongest in the team. As a 19-year-old, so far, I think he's been rock solid. That's really impressive to see as an outsider. He's, first of all, a nice guy and a very strong driver, so that's a good combination."

Norris, who claimed his first victory of the season in Hungary, agreed: "I think you have to say Kimi, as a complete package. They have a great car, and he's done an incredible job, convincingly beating his team-mate every single weekend."

Antonelli himself remained humble: "I don't really like judging, but I feel like I've done a good first half. But there's still a long way before I reach their level, the two drivers next to me. Still lots of work to do."

The one flaw: track limits

But there is a weakness. Antonelli is the worst offender on the grid when it comes to track limits breaches in grands prix this season, with 22 laps deleted through the opening 11 races. His father, Marco, delivered a colourful warning after the Belgian Grand Prix.

"He said, 'Congrats, but…' — always a but!" Antonelli recalled with a smirk. "'… if I see you doing another track limits for nothing, I'm going to stretch your neck like a chicken!'"

The issue stems from Antonelli's aggressive driving style — he carries maximum speed into corners and wrestles with the car when it slides, which often pushes him over the white lines at corner exits. It is the same style that allows him to outpace Russell, but it has proven costly. A five-second penalty at Silverstone dropped him from ninth to 15th and cost two championship points. He also received penalties in the Miami sprint and the Barcelona race.

"I look back at Spa, and the two track limits I did were very stupid," Antonelli admitted. "I was like, 'What the heck am I doing?' It was a bit like that in Barcelona as well, and Miami. Sometimes in a race, I might need to use them — but if I use them when I don't need to, then I might find myself in trouble."

Mercedes reliability a lingering concern

Antonelli's lead could have been even greater had it not been for mechanical failures. An electrical shutdown ended his race in Barcelona when he was running second, costing an estimated 18 points. A left-front wheel shield failure at Silverstone — where Wolff said he "would have caught Charles six laps to the end with a huge tyre offset" — cost another 18 points and dropped him to 15th.

Wolff has urged caution despite the commanding position. "It's too early to say" whether Antonelli is the title favourite, he said. "There's so many races to go. A DNF or two can just swing massively and we've not been great on reliability, so we just have to continue to maximise every single day from the Friday onwards to the Sunday."

Should Antonelli clinch the title, he would become F1's youngest ever champion, smashing Sebastian Vettel's record of 23 years and four months. He would also be the first Italian champion in 73 years, since Alberto Ascari in 1953. And with Imola potentially hosting the season finale should Middle East races be cancelled, there is a tantalising prospect of Antonelli being crowned on home soil.

For now, the 19-year-old's focus is simpler. "For sure it's something I'm working on," he said of his track limits habit. It is a measure of how far he has come that the only real criticism of his season is a habit of pushing too hard.
