Rain Denies Northamptonshire Dramatic Derbyshire Chase
Northamptonshire’s chase ends in frustration
Northamptonshire’s promotion hopes suffered a frustrating setback as bad light and rain denied them a likely County Championship victory over Derbyshire at the County Ground.
Chasing 349 for victory, Northants reached 326-6 before the umpires took the players off at 16:20 BST. The match was officially declared a draw 90 minutes later, leaving Northamptonshire four points behind second-placed Kent in Division Two with one round of matches remaining.

Vasconcelos leads the charge
Ricardo Vasconcelos produced another outstanding performance, scoring 132 for his sixth County Championship century of the season. He shared a 152-run opening partnership with Luke Procter, who made 51, as Northamptonshire began the chase positively and reached lunch on 152-0.
Vasconcelos passed 1,000 runs for the season during his innings and later put on 78 with Calvin Harrison, who scored 50. That stand reduced the target to below 100 before Derbyshire struck back with three further wickets.
Late drama before the weather intervenes
Harrison was bowled shortly after reaching his half-century, and Vasconcelos followed five balls later when he was dismissed by Brett Randell. Northamptonshire still had a chance through George Bartlett, who was unbeaten on 24 from 22 balls and had just hit a six when play was abandoned.
The result came after Northamptonshire had fought back from losing three wickets for 36 shortly after lunch. Derbyshire’s bowlers, including Shoaib Bashir and Muhammad Abbas, applied pressure as scoring slowed, but the visitors remained in contention until the weather ended the contest.
Derbyshire took 14 points from the draw and Northamptonshire 13, a result that could prove costly in the promotion race. Northants needed 23 runs from 22.2 overs when the match was stopped.
