Rapids' Cannon relieved after ending scoring duck ahead of LAFC test

Colorado Rapids defender Reggie Cannon has spoken of his relief after netting his first goal of the MLS season, as his side prepare to welcome Los Angeles FC on Wednesday bidding for a third consecutive league victory.

The 28-year-old opened the scoring in the Rapids' 2-0 win over Sporting Kansas City last weekend, Colorado's third victory in four matches since the World Cup break. It was the fourth goal of Cannon's MLS career and his first since the 2024 campaign — a drought he was delighted to end at a crucial moment.

Cannon: It really feels good

Nordic defender Cannon, though also a right-back, is eager to add more end product to his game, and his set-piece header against SKC offered exactly the kind of contribution he craves.

"It's a really good feeling," said Cannon. "Personally, just getting that stress relief off. It really feels good. But ultimately, to help the team in that moment, when things just weren't clicking in front of goal, especially those first 70 minutes. It makes me feel really good."

He reserved praise for the entire collective effort, pointing to consecutive clean sheets as evidence of a team performing at a high level.

"Overall, our performance has been very good defensively. We've had consecutive shutouts now, and I think everyone's performing at a high level. But obviously, that offensive side is something every defender loves to add to their game. Adding that on the set piece is really fortunate for me. I'm very happy."

Stiff test against LAFC

Colorado's momentum will be tested by a Los Angeles FC side sitting third in the Western Conference, nine points above in the standings. LAFC saw their five-game unbeaten run in the competition end at the weekend, losing 1-0 to 10-man San Diego FC after a late penalty.

Players to watch

Colorado Rapids – Rafael Navarro: The forward scored his 10th goal of the season in Saturday's win over Sporting Kansas City, his third straight double-digit scoring campaign. Navarro is the second player in club history to reach at least 10 goals in three different seasons, joining Conor Casey (2007–2009).

Los Angeles FC – Son Heung-min: Son attempted four shots and created four chances on Saturday. He has been directly involved in 165 shots since his MLS debut last August, the third-most in the league over that span behind only Lionel Messi (244) and Evander (180).

Match prediction and form guide

The last two meetings between the sides have ended in draws, including a scoreless stalemate in Los Angeles on April 22. Before that run, only one of the first 16 meetings between the teams had finished level.

Colorado have recorded back-to-back shutout wins in regular-season play for the first time since May 2025 and have not won three straight games since July-September 2025, last posting three consecutive clean sheets in May-June 2010.

LAFC, meanwhile, have won just one of their last five matches in all competitions, though two of those draws ended in shoot-out successes in the Leagues Cup. They have conceded no more than once in any of those games.

Opta win probability: Colorado 26.8%, Draw 23.8%, LAFC 49.4%.
