Adrian Gill completes MLS debut after ACL ordeal as Atlanta United face Minnesota

Gill marks long-awaited return with full MLS debut

Adrian Gill has completed one of the most significant steps of his comeback by starting and playing all 90 minutes in Atlanta United’s 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls.

Adrian Gill of Atlanta United

The 20-year-old midfielder’s appearance came after a lengthy and difficult rehabilitation from an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in 2023 while he was with Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia. Gill required two surgeries, leaving his playing career in doubt before he returned to action with Atlanta’s second team earlier this year.

Despite reaching the first-team milestone he had been waiting for, Gill insists the achievement is only part of the journey.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been dreaming about this,” Gill said. “Coming here and getting a new opportunity and finally getting to debut, start, play 90 [minutes], it’s incredible.”

Gill also credited Atlanta’s staff and teammates with helping him rediscover the demands of playing as a defensive midfielder and complete a full match.

“I think they give me the freedom to learn how to play the six again, remember what it’s like to play a 90-minute game and [have been] very supportive in everything I do,” he said. “But obviously, there’s so much more work to do, so we’re not finished at all.”

Atlanta travel to a struggling Minnesota side

Atlanta now visit Minnesota United, who have slipped to ninth in the Western Conference after a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake. The Loons are winless in their last eight regular-season matches, drawing five and losing three, although they have shared the points in each of their last three games.

Joaquin Pereyra rescued Minnesota with an 89th-minute equaliser against Real Salt Lake. He has been involved in each of the club’s last five non-penalty goals, scoring twice and providing three assists.

Atlanta will look to Miguel Almiron, who has contributed a goal or assist in four consecutive regular-season matches. That run consists of three goals and one assist and is one match short of the longest such streak of his MLS career.

History gives Atlanta encouragement

Atlanta won each of its first two visits to Minnesota and last played there in March 2018, when the Five Stripes claimed a 1-0 victory. Minnesota nevertheless enters the match as the statistical favorite, with an Opta win probability of 53.7%, compared with 23.3% for a draw and 23% for an Atlanta victory.

For Gill, the match offers another opportunity to build on a debut that represents both a personal breakthrough and the beginning of a demanding new phase in his recovery.
