'Proud Irishmen': Hallgrimsson hails players after 3-0 Ireland win over Israel in controversial Nations League clash

Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson called it “probably the toughest day of my coaching career” after his side’s 3-0 victory against Israel in the Nations League – but he was quick to shift the spotlight on to his players.

“It’s not about me. It’s about the players and they’ve shown today how much playing for Ireland means to them. They represented themselves on the pitch with dignity but also with the power of proud Irishmen. They’ve shown today how much playing for Ireland means to them and hopefully they will have the support of the Irish people.”

The fixture was deeply controversial. Before kick-off, the Irish players looked down at the grass with their heads bowed and hands behind their backs during the Israeli national anthem. The Irish captain, Dara O’Shea, shook hands with the referee and his assistants, but there was no attempt to shake the hand of the Israel captain, Manor Solomon.

Hallgrimsson’s words underscored the emotional weight carried by the squad heading into the match, as his side delivered a commanding performance to secure the win on a night dominated by events off the pitch as much as on it.
