New Zealand recall Carson, Penfold, Rowe and James for Australia T20Is
Four players return for New Zealand’s Australia series
New Zealand have recalled Eden Carson, Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe and Bella James for a three-match T20I series against Australia later this month. The quartet missed selection for the recent T20 World Cup after being part of the wider group.

Carson is available again after recovering from elbow surgery, which had kept her out of action since December. The off-spinner has 51 international caps and joins a spin group that includes captain Amelia Kerr, Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire.
“To be back in the WHITE FERNS environment is really special,” Carson said. “The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I’ve been fortunate to have great support around me and I’m feeling ready to get back out there and contribute.”
Changes across the attack and batting options
Penfold and Rowe strengthen the pace resources following the international retirements of Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu. James adds another batting option after Suzie Bates’s departure. Rowe and James spent part of the winter with New Zealand A in Sri Lanka, while Penfold recently played for Sandgate Redcliffe Gators in Australia’s KFC T20 Max competition.
Wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze will miss the series after surgery on a persistent thumb injury. She is targeting a return to cricket in early 2027, with Polly Inglis set to take over wicketkeeping duties.
Brownlie to lead side as interim head coach
Dean Brownlie, New Zealand’s batting coach for nearly four years, will take charge as interim head coach following Ben Sawyer’s departure. Further coaching appointments for the tour are expected to be announced next week.
Brownlie said the returning players offered a blend of experience and potential. “Competing against the best in the world is always going to be a challenge, but it also provides a lot of opportunities to learn and strengthen skillsets within that,” he said.
The series will be New Zealand’s first international assignment of the 2026-27 season and part of the team’s preparations for the inaugural 2027 ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in India.
