Marc Skinner leaves Manchester United Women by mutual agreement

Manchester United are searching for a new head coach ahead of the 2026-27 season after Marc Skinner stepped down from his role by mutual agreement, ending a five-year spell in charge of the women's team.

United's campaign is due to begin in just over a month, on September 4 against London City Lionesses, but Skinner will not be in the dugout for the opening fixture.

A tenure that broke new ground

Skinner, 43, departs having made history at the club. He led United to their first major trophy in 2024 when they lifted the Women's FA Cup, and guided the team into the Champions League group stage for the first time last year after finishing second in the Women's Super League in 2024-25. United also finished as runners-up in three domestic cup finals during his time in charge.

"Marc leaves having made a significant contribution to the continued progress of Manchester United Women," the club said in their statement. "The club places on record its sincere thanks for his professionalism, commitment and dedication throughout his time at United, and wishes him every success in the future."

Transfer frustration behind the split

Skinner's contract had been due to run until at least 2027, having signed a two-year extension with a one-year option last summer. However, reports suggest he grew frustrated by a quiet transfer window, with United now targeting younger players in the hope of building for the future.

So far this summer, United have brought in just two signings — defender Andrea Medina and goalkeeper Janina Leitzig — while Melvine Malard departed for Chelsea.

United chase a replacement before the new season

United reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season but finished fourth in the WSL, nine points behind third-placed Chelsea and 15 adrift of champions Manchester City.

With the clock ticking towards the season opener, United are reportedly advanced in their search for Skinner's successor as they look to mount a fresh challenge at the top of the domestic game.
