Frimpong Substitution Raises Concerns

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has expressed confidence that Jeremie Frimpong has not suffered a serious injury after the Dutch defender asked to be substituted during the club's pre-season friendly against Leeds United.

Frimpong was taken off in the 77th minute of the match in Chicago, potentially creating a defensive headache for Iraola ahead of the new Premier League season. The right-back had earlier assisted Florian Wirtz's goal in a match that saw Liverpool surrender a 2-0 half-time lead to lose 4-2.

Manager Remains Optimistic

Speaking to Liverpool media after the game, Iraola downplayed concerns about Frimpong's fitness. "Jeremie asked for the sub, but I don't think it's an injury," Iraola said. "It was just some overload, and I hope he's not injured in that way. I don't think we've lost anyone."

The news comes as a relief for Liverpool, who are already dealing with several injury concerns. Joe Gomez is set to miss the start of the season after suffering a muscle issue in the club's first pre-season friendly, while Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined as they continue their recoveries.

Valuable Lessons from Defeat

Despite the disappointing result, Iraola found positives in the performance. Liverpool put in a strong display in the first half but struggled to match Leeds' pressure after the break, with set-pieces once again proving problematic.

Leeds finished the game with 15 shots (seven on target) worth 2.2 expected goals (xG), while Liverpool managed just nine efforts worth 1.1 xG.

"I think we learn a lot of things," Iraola added. "Obviously, it's not the result you want, but I think [it was] probably the most useful friendly we played – in a positive way in the first half and in a negative way in the second half. I think we've learned a lot, and I think we can take good conclusions and solve some things."

New Signings Make Impact

The match marked the first pre-season appearances for Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch, with Iraola pleased with how they settled back in.

"I think they did really well," he said of the trio. "They played their first 45 minutes. Obviously, Florian and Alex, because they were playing in the first half, they had an easier game or a better game. Ryan, it was costly for him."

Liverpool will now look to address the defensive issues exposed in the second half as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
