Glamorgan Batter Billy Root Announces Retirement at End of 2026 Season

Glamorgan batter Billy Root has announced he will retire from top-flight cricket at the conclusion of the 2026 season, following in the footsteps of long-serving teammate Colin Ingram.

The 34-year-old, who is the younger brother of England batting great Joe Root, arrived at the Welsh county from Nottinghamshire ahead of the 2019 campaign. Over seven seasons with Glamorgan, he established himself as a central pillar of their batting lineup across all formats.

A Stellar Glamorgan Career

Root has made 67 first-class appearances for Glamorgan, compiling nearly 5,000 runs across competitions. His red-ball tenure in Cardiff features seven centuries, highlighted by a career-best double century against Northamptonshire.

Beyond the County Championship, Root played a crucial role in Glamorgan's recent limited-overs triumphs, helping guide the side to victory in the 2024 One-Day Cup final—marking the club's second white-ball title in three years.

High Praise from the Club

Paying tribute to Root's impact, Glamorgan director of cricket Mark Wallace praised his leadership, resilience, and reliability under pressure:

"Billy has been a hugely important part of Glamorgan over the last seven seasons. His professionalism, his consistency, and his ability to perform in big moments have made him a key figure in our squad."

"He is admired by team-mates and staff alike, and his contribution to our recent white-ball success cannot be overstated."

The club also noted his unique capability "to anchor an innings, absorb pressure, and deliver when Glamorgan needed him most." Root, who has featured in two County Championship Division One matches this season, will look to finish his county career on a high over the remainder of the 2026 summer.
