Punjab sign Umesh Yadav to end 34-year Ranji Trophy wait

Punjab turn to Umesh Yadav for Ranji Trophy push

Punjab have made a historic move to strengthen their red-ball campaign, signing 38-year-old India pacer Umesh Yadav as a guest player for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season.

The agreement makes Umesh the first guest player recruited by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). He has received a no-objection certificate from the Vidarbha Cricket Association and is expected to join Punjab’s Ranji Trophy camp shortly.

Experience to address Punjab’s title drought

Punjab have not won the Ranji Trophy since 1992, and PCA president Amarjit Mehta said the decision was driven by the team’s focus on red-ball cricket and the belief that Umesh can help deliver the long-awaited title.

“His experience is going to be invaluable to the youngsters in the team. There is so much to learn from someone of Umesh’s stature,” Mehta said.

Umesh brings substantial international and domestic experience, having played 55 Tests, 75 ODIs and nine T20Is for India. He has also won the Ranji Trophy with Vidarbha.

India commitments create bowling gap

Punjab’s decision also reflects concerns over their fast-bowling depth. Gurnoor Brar and Arshdeep Singh are expected to be involved with India, leaving the state side without two important pace options for parts of the season.

Punjab coach Amit Uniyal described Umesh as fit and capable of making an impact in Indian conditions, while cautioning that his selection for every match will depend on the team combination.

“There is no guarantee that he will play all the matches. A lot will depend on the combination as well. But his presence in the dressing room is going to be huge,” Uniyal said.

Umesh last played for India in the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in June 2023. Punjab will begin their Ranji Trophy campaign against Assam at New Chandigarh on October 11.
