BCB Mulls Leadership Options After Najmul's Firm No to Test Captaincy
Former Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain has firmly declined the opportunity to reclaim his leadership role, prompting the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to assess alternative candidates for the position.
Najmul’s exit from the captaincy came after his ODI leadership was revoked. He made his stance clear in a conversation with cricket operation chairman Nazmul Abedin, where he communicated his decision not to lead the Test side at this time. "He (Najmul) is not interested to lead at the moment," confirmed a BCB source.
In the wake of this development, the BCB is reportedly looking toward current T20I skipper Litton Kumar Das as a frontrunner to take up the Test captaincy. The board is awaiting his response ahead of the two-match Test series against Ireland, scheduled to kick off on November 11 in Sylhet.
ODI captain Mehidy Hasan had previously indicated interest in leading the Test team, but his chances appear to be diminishing. Bangladesh's performance under his leadership in ODIs—scoring only three wins from 13 matches—has been a cause for concern. This poor run has led the board to question his suitability for an additional leadership role.
BCB president Aminul Islam emphasized a consultative approach to decision-making, stating that the board, selectors, and coaching staff would jointly determine the next captain. Other potential candidates being considered include Taijul Islam, who has openly expressed his desire to lead, and Mominul Haque, who has signaled his willingness to take on the role if offered.
The BCB's next steps will be crucial in shaping the future direction of Bangladesh’s Test team, especially with important fixtures on the horizon.
