St. Louis City beat New York Red Bulls 3-0 to extend unbeaten run to 19 games
St. Louis close in on Whitecaps after late show
St. Louis City SC are now unbeaten in 19 straight games in all competitions after a 3-0 victory over New York Red Bulls. The win, played at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Wednesday after being postponed from Saturday due to bad weather, moves St. Louis within three points of the Vancouver Whitecaps at the summit of MLS' Western Conference.
Rafael Navarro finished from close range in the fifth minute to open the scoring. Roman Burki made a smart stop to deny Jorge Ruvalcaba, before Emil Forsberg squandered a gilt-edged chance to level for the Red Bulls. Eric Choupo-Moting saw an attempt cleared off the line, though Ethan Horvath then had to make a superb save to keep New York in the contest.
Two substitutes sealed the points for St. Louis City. First, Simon Becher drilled in from the edge of the box, paving the way for Tomas Ostrak to finish off the job in stoppage time.
Surge continues in the West
St. Louis City are within three points of the Whitecaps at the summit of the West, but they are one of the form teams in the competition. That is now 17 straight MLS games without a defeat for St. Louis City, who have also scored in each of those matches.
Only two teams in MLS history have ever gone on a longer unbeaten run than this current streak managed by St. Louis City, W12 D5. They are FC Dallas in 2010 with 19 games and the Columbus Crew in 2004 with 18 matches.
Becher played a decisive role from the bench. He leads the way for goal involvements during this brilliant St. Louis run, with 10 in total — seven goals and three assists.
