Chennai Super Kings could turn to former England World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan to take over their dugout following the end of Stephen Fleming's long and successful reign, according to veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin.

The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions recently parted ways with Fleming following a pair of underwhelming campaigns. The franchise is now actively planning a major rebuild to return to title-winning ways, with Morgan's name reportedly emerging at the forefront of their coaching shortlist.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed that discussions regarding Morgan are already underway, though the timeline of an official appointment remains uncertain.

"I have a feeling Eoin Morgan might be coming… His name is doing the rounds strongly…; early discussions are on, no doubt. In this, two scenarios: Eoin Morgan—will he take it this year? Or someone else builds the team in a mini auction, and he takes it later?" Ashwin said.

Morgan, who retired from professional cricket in 2023, has not yet served as a head coach at either franchise or international level, primarily working as a broadcaster and analyst since stepping off the field. However, his reputation as one of limited-overs cricket's sharpest tactical minds—having spearheaded England's transformation into a dominant white-ball unit and captaining them to the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title—makes him an attractive prospect for the Super Kings.

Dhoni to anchor transition

Ashwin also highlighted the pivotal role MS Dhoni is likely to play during this transitional phase, especially with the next IPL mega auction looming on the horizon.

"I have a strong hunch that under Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together… Personally, that route is the correct one. I still think so. Because the appointment will be a touch late. Because the mega auction is only one year away. … That’s my strongest hunch for at least the next one year," Ashwin explained.

With Fleming's departure ending one of the most stable and decorated coach-captain partnerships in T20 history, CSK are set to embark on a fresh chapter, leaning heavily on Dhoni's leadership while potentially ushering in Morgan's aggressive white-ball philosophy.
