The announcement comes following the departure of Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the national team suffered a disappointing round-of-32 exit at this summer's World Cup.

Xavi's appointment is a historic milestone for the Dutch national team, marking the first time a foreign manager has taken the helm since Ernst Happel served from 1977 to 1998. The 46-year-old arrives with a deep-rooted appreciation for the Dutch philosophy of football, which heavily influenced his own development at the La Masia academy.

'A Son of Dutch Football'

Speaking on his appointment, Xavi highlighted the philosophical ties between Spanish and Dutch football, specifically citing the influence of legendary figures Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels.

"As someone who received his training at the Barcelona academy, with strong influences from Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, among others, I feel a special connection to Dutch football," Xavi stated. "You could say that I am a bit of a son of Dutch football. I consider it a tremendous honour to become the national coach of the Dutch national team."

The Road Ahead

The Spaniard has committed to a four-year deal, ensuring stability for the squad as they build toward Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. Xavi's tenure begins with an immediate high-profile challenge: a home clash against Jurgen Klopp's Germany on September 24.

Following the German encounter, the Oranje will dive into the Nations League, where Xavi will lead his side through two fixtures against Serbia and one against Greece.
